Feed formula In winter, layers receive 150g of food a day, while broilers receive 180g. Gestation crates remain the standard on over three-fourths of U.S. hog farms today, according to the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC). And 98 percent of producers use gestation stalls at least some of the time, such as immediately after artificial insemination.

In response to questions about the petition, Trader Joe’s replied by email to Civil Eats, “We have heard, understand, and care about the concerns of our customers regarding the use of crates in the pork supply chain,” the email said. “As a result, we have clarified for our customers the products we carry that are from a crate-free supply. Additionally, in the next several months, we will be moving our fresh pork offerings to a crate-free [gestation and farrowing] supply and will clarify this crate-free attribute on the product labels for our customers.”

The farrowing house was remodeled three times over the 55 years. In the beginning, the family farrowed four times a year, then later transitioned to running about 10 sows through the barn every week on a rotation. The 200-sow herd produced just shy of 4,000 pigs a year.

Chamberlain said the trail was identified as a priority for the Community Quality of Life team. A $197,971 grant from the Oklahoma State Trails and Recreation Department helped provide the funding for the project.

"One of the specific pigs who was in an illegal sow stall, was three weeks later found with her piglets in a farrowing crate. If she had only just been mated, this would suggest, bizarrely, that she had a gestation period of three weeks, rather than the actual 16-week pregnancy of pigs," Kriek said.   

Now, the risk of injury that would short-circuit a lucrative career as a sire seems to loom a lot larger. There is also, of course, the risk of defeat, which takes away some of the invincibility of a Triple Crown winner. American Pharoah was in that invincible category until he lost the Travers Stakes in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., two months after winning the Belmont.

Hsiung estimates that he and other DxE members have, in person, investigated upward of 50 Smithfield facilities all over the country. While the latest investigation wrapped up after Smithfield declared its transition away from gestation crates was accomplished, the previous ones were during the transition, and Hsiung says he saw little evidence that the company was moving in the right direction. A final difference between the ACT legislation and the NSW bill is that farrowing crates (which were designed to reduce the chance of piglets being trampled or crushed by the sow) will also be banned by 2020 if the NSW bill is successful.

When the Humane Society of the United States conducted an undercover investigation of Smithfield in 2010, after the company made its pledge but before its self-imposed deadline for phasing out gestation crates, the group found that “some sows had bitten their bars so incessantly that blood from their mouths coated the front of their crates.” The Humane Society’s investigator pointed out one sow who has a “basketball-sized abscess on her neck.” The barn manager said to ignore it, and then “cut the abscess open with an unsterilized razor.”
