China news agency, Beijing, July 4 (Wang Qingkai, Huo Chenmeng)
Chinese Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Yu Kangzhen said at the State Council policy briefing on the 4th that the African porcine plague areas in 25 provinces and autonomous regions have been lifted. The blockade, the momentum of China’s African swine fever epidemic has slowed down significantly, and the normal production and delivery order of pigs is recovering.
Yu Kangzhen said that in August 2018, the African swine fever epidemic occurred in China, and various departments worked together to achieve phased results. As of July 3, 2019, there were 143 cases of African swine fever in the country, killing more than 1.16 million pigs. Since the beginning of this year, there have been 44 cases of African swine fever, and except for April, the number of new outbreaks in the other five months has remained in single digits.
Yu Kangzhen said that the situation of China’s African piglet prevention and control is still complicated and grim. From an international point of view, the prevention and control of African swine fever is a global problem. Among the 68 countries and regions where the epidemic has occurred, only 13 countries have achieved eradication. From the domestic perspective, China is the world’s largest pig-raising country, but veterinarians. Work basis, epidemic prevention capacity, safeguard measures, etc. are not suitable for prevention and control requirements.
Although the epidemic was under control, the production of live pigs was significantly affected, and the stock of pigs showed a significant decline. According to the monitoring of 400 pig-raising counties by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the live pig stocks in May fell by 4.2% from the previous month and down 22.9% year-on-year.
In this regard, Yang Zhenhai, director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs will work with relevant departments to effectively focus on the key tasks of stable pig production.
First, speed up the implementation of policies to support the recovery and development of live pigs, and carry out temporary production assistance for large-scale pig farms in large counties; second, strengthen information guidance and technical services, strengthen fixed-point monitoring of live pig production and market price scheduling, and encourage pig farms. The third is to develop standardized scale farming; the fourth is to accelerate the utilization of livestock and poultry manure resources; the fifth is to optimize the layout of the pig industry and improve the production and supply support capacity of pigs.
